Facebook has released a new feature in response to a heightened suicide rate in the United States which will assist its users in helping their friends who are struggling with mental illness. The new feature consists of a drop-down menu that will let friends tag posts that they consider to be concerning, and Facebook will offer suggested responses to the post that feature suicide prevention tips. Additionally, when the user whose post was flagged logs on next, a post detailing nearby facilities from which to receive help will appear on their homepage. If implemented successfully, this new tool will help those who are feeling suicidal and aid their friends in preventing suicidal actions.
