In today’s music scene, it seems like many artists blend together. It’s getting harder and harder to stand out and be noticed if you have a different sound or look from what’s considered mainstream. Yunalis Zaria, Yuna for short, is somehow doing just that. The 29-year-old, born in Malaysia, moved from her homeland to Los Angeles in 2011 in hopes of making it in the music industry.
After three successful albums, it seems she has done just that. Working with artists like Usher, Jhene Aiko, and DJ Premier on her latest, and most successful album, Chapters, Yuna continues her rise to fame while keeping her head level and her values at the forefront.
Yuna is a devout Muslim, choosing to cover her hair in a hijab and cover her body from neck down, something rarely seen in the sex fueled music world. Despite mostly welcome arms when her fans finally saw the face behind the music, Yuna still faces criticism about the way she dresses. "People say, 'You should let your hair out; you shouldn't be oppressed -- you're not in Malaysia anymore. You should show your curves and be proud of it.' But I am proud -- it's my choice to cover up my body. I'm not oppressed -- I'm free."
Yuna doesn’t let the criticism or haters hold her back though, instead she is successfully reaching many different generations with her music.
A star on the rise, be sure to check out Yuna’s music! You won’t be disappointed.
