The Kennedy Center has decided to make hip hop one of the pillars of its 2016 programming schedule. On Tuesday, the Kennedy Center named rapper Q-Tip its first artistic director of hip-hop culture.
Q-Tip is the founding member of New York City hip-hop pioneers A Tribe Called Quest, which is expected to start performances this summer at the Kennedy Center. Q-Tip said he is dedicated to bringing a dynamic new program to the Kennedy Center that will bring the transformative power of hip hop to auciences locally and nationally.
The Kennedy Center brought Q-Tip on board following the tremendous success of first-time performer Kendrick Lamar's show with the National Symphony Orchestra back in October.
