What You Missed - News Recap

BY MARQUIS GOODWIN

The National Football League owns Sunday for most of the year. This past Sunday was reserved for love… and basketball.

Valentine’s Day not only signifies a day of love it simultaneously marks the day of the NBA All-Star game. Every year the NBA All-Star weekend wraps up with an All-Star game on Valentine’s Day making lovers choose between their love for the game or their love for their partner. The lucky ones get both.

SPORTS: NBA All-Star Weekend

This year’s All-Star weekend called Toronto, Canada home. This is the first time the NBA held its celebration of talent outside of the country. It kicked off Friday with the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. Renowned Canadian rapper, Drake, coached team Canada while Philadelphia comedian, actor and four-time NBA All-Star Celebrity Game MVP, Kevin Hart, coached team USA. The USA team featured the likes of former SNL star, Jason Sudeikus, actor Anthony Anderson, and Straight Outta Compton standout, O’Shea Jackson Jr. The Canadian team also had star power with tennis great, Milos Raonic, stars of the HGTV Network’s Property Brothers, Drew and Jonathan Scott, and the actor that plays Jesse Owens in the upcoming movie Race, Stephan James. Team Canada earned a 74-63 victory with the lead singer of Arcade Fire, Win Butler, winning the Most Valuable Player Award.

As for the rest of the weekend, the most entertaining day occurred Saturday with the NBA’s skills challenge, three-point contest and dunk contest. In the inaugural year that big men were allowed to compete in the competition, NBA rookie Karl-Anthony Town defeated Isaiah Thomas in the skills challenge finals. Klay Thompson defeated his teammate and defending champion, Steph Curry, to take home the three-point competition. Still the most exciting event came at the end. Minnesota Timberwolves, Zack LaVine, and Orlando Magic, Aaron Gordon, put on a show for the ages. LaVine eventually edged Gordon with a between the legs dunk … from the free throw line.

Plenty of dunks also went down Sunday when the NBA All-Star Game tipped off. In a game of strictly offense the West beat the East 196-173. Oklahoma City Thunder guard, Russell Westbrook, earned the MVP honors for the second year in a row. This marks the first time this ever occurred.

BEAUTY: Lip Kit By Kylie

For those more into the love aspect of Sunday, the trendy gift for the holiday came from a member of one of the most trendy families. Kylie Jenner’s Valentine’s Day Lip Kit was the “it” gift this year coming complete with a Valentine’s Day note from Kylie herself. While the gift seemed to be a holiday must-have, it was a hard item to get hands on. The kit released three colors last Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 and sold out seconds later. In total the kit now features six shades ranging from family names like “Koko K” and “Mary Jo K” to the simplistic True Brown K and Candy K. Whereas the initial retail price was $29, the resell markup tops $1,000 on some eBay listings.

MUSIC: Kanye at the Garden

The other hot ticket this past week also comes from a Kardashian Klan member. Kanye West sold out Madison Square Garden for his album listening party and Yeezy Season 3 fashion show. "THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS WE SOLD MADISON SQUARE GARDEN OUT IN 10 MINUTES!!!" tweeted Kanye. For those that did not get a ticket the show could also be seen in 700 theaters in 23 countries. If all else failed, the show also aired on the digital platform Tidal.

After weeks of debate and crowdsourcing, Kanye finally decided upon a title for his album. Viewers finally got to hear the self-proclaimed “rap god’s” latest album, “The Life of Pablo.” Celebrities like Travis Scott, Carine Roitfeld, Push-T, Charlie XCX, 2 Chainz, Estelle, 50 Cent, A$AP Rocky and the entire Kardashian Klan, including Caitlin Jenner, North West and Lamar Odom, all accompanied Kanye for the debut of “TLOP” and the presentation of his third collection for Adidas.
