Yasiin Bey, also known as Mos Def, has announced that he is retiring from music and will release his last album this year.

Many may know Bey has been detained in Cape Town, South Africa since Jan. 14 for charges of using fake travel documents to leave the country. The South African government has also demanded deportation of his family, who is currently residing there.

Through rapper Kanye West’s website, Bey left an audio message to all his fans. In the message he discusses his charges and innocence, and performs an acapella freestyle that was supposedly meant be a part of Kanye West’s newly released “No More Parties in L.A.” Finally he ends the message with, “I’m retiring from the music recording industry… I’ll be releasing my final album this year and that’s that.”

A few of these last song titles were released on the Mos Def Official Instagram page and has various rappers such as Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and more. Though it’s definitely sad to hear this great artist retire, fans that truly know him know that Bey was always an outspoken activist who always had a strong reasoning behind his decisions.
