Helping the hungry

As Thanksgiving approaches, charities from all places come together to help and give families in need the Thanksgiving feast they otherwise would not be able to have. Through donations, fundraisers, and volunteer work, those who would otherwise go hungry this holiday can enjoy delicious food and warm company.

Serving Up Hope is an organization that focuses on raising awareness and ending hunger in the community. Every year, hospitality organizations come together to work toward the goal of ending hunger by holding a luncheon.

Everything at the luncheon is donated, and all proceeds benefit Food Bank of the Rockies and its Denver's table program. Their annual luncheon, which was hosted on Nov. 3 this year, continues to be a success. Last year's luncheon alone raised $24,500 and 26,000 pounds of non-perishable food items that was then donated.

Other organizations in our local area work toward this same mission of ending hunger. This year, the Hyyer Life brand and Central Union Mission of DC are teaming up along with many other sponsors to meet this goal by having a Charity Basketball Tournament where the proceeds will go towards feeding the homeless in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas. The tournament will be held on November 28. In the meantime, a Gofundme page has been set up in hopes of raising funds before Thanksgiving for those families in need.

If you are looking for volunteer opportunities in and around D.C., worry not, for there are many to choose from. Food and Friends organization sponsors Slice of Life, a program that sells thousands of pies for Thanksgiving to collect funds that support thousands of local residents battling life-challenging illnesses. Another organization is Holiday Helpings. They run a food drive, cash drive, and telethon to provide Thanksgiving meals to low-income families. Volunteers are needed to collect canned food and cash donations and load and unload trucks of food.

The list of volunteer opportunities is endless in our nation's capital. If you are looking to actively participate in bringing meals to those in need this holiday season, find an organization and volunteer your time for a great cause.
