After a year full of ups and downs, including leaving the biggest boyband in the world, Zayn Malik is here to ease our wondering minds in his story for the December 2015/January 2016 issue of The Fader.

Along with gracing the cover of the magazine, he also previewed “Befour," his first single as a solo artist. Malik tackled those burning questions we have about everything from leaving One Direction, how the fans’ obsession with “shipping” put a strain on their friendships, cheating on ex-fiance/Little Mix member Perrie Edwards and breaking up with her over text, and everything in between.

The singer also delves into where his personal musical influences come from. After admitting he’s not a stranger to Bollywood because of his Pakistani heritage, he says his father owned a plethora of 90’s R&B and rap records, which explains his killer vocals. Malik also gives an inside scoop to what his debut album will be like.

They don’t really fit a specific type of music. They’re not like, ‘This is funk, this is soul, this is upbeat, this is a dance tune.’ Nothing is like that. I don’t really know what my style is yet. I’m kind of just showing what my influences are. Depending on what the reaction is, then I’ll go somewhere with that. If people like that I’m a bit more R&B, then I’ll do more R&B on my next album. If they like the fact that there’s reggae on there, I might do more reggae. It’s just depending on what they want and what I feel comfortable with at the time. I might even have a rock tune on the album, but it’s kind of like R&B-rock.
